Early childhood education can be looked at in many different ways, by many different people. One thing that is for sure in this field is the need for developmentally appropriate practices when working with very young children. Early childhood education consists of children from birth to the age of eight years old. For the purposes of preschool education we are talking about young children from the ages of three to five years old.
According to the website http://www.earlychildhoodeducations.com/, "An early childhood education consists of a child being aware of their motor abilities and then their level of intelligence, which will increase steadily as they begin to question their motives and their imagination."
The website for the National Dropout Prevention Centers states that "Early childhood education is holistic; nurturing; consistent; hands on; stimulating; exploratory; and integrates interactive learning across the curriculum. (Stegelin 2004)" This website also says the most effective way to prevent children from becoming a dropout is to give them a good start from the beginning of their education that fosters a love of learning.
On the Walden University website for early childhood education it is said that while there are many theories and philosophies on early childhood education the Association for Childhood Education International believes every teacher should use what they learn to develop their own philosophy. This website also states, "In the past century some researchers have developed theories of education that focus on beginning stages of education." They believe a proper start could set the tone for the remainder of a child's school years.
Another great website which gives information on the Head Start program gives this information: Head Start is a national program that promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social, and other services to enrolled children and their families.
All of these websites are in accordance with what I believe about early childhood education.
